With all of our modern electrical conveniences, it is amazing to imagine that the very first domestic home lighting innovations were created over seventy thousand years ago when our ancestors filled a hollow animal shell, tough fruit casing or hollow rock with grass or moss and soaked it with animal fat before igniting it. This basic lamp allowed work to be carried out inside the home in the dark, having a great effect on the development of civilisation and socialisation, and through many evolutions, leading to the comforts and conveniences we enjoy today, as well as allowing www.harrrisonlighting.co.uk to stay in business! Much later, in the eighteenth century, oil lamps were invented, which allowed limited control of the brightness of the light source, but were not without their dangers and gas lighting was common in many homes and urban areas from the early nineteenth century to the first decades of the twentieth century. Famously, Thomas Edison improved on an earlier idea for an electrical filament bulb in the 1870s, and lights which were fluorescent and used halogen emerged in the 1930s and 1950s respectively.
At Harrison Lighting, we are extremely proud to be a part of a history of invention and innovation which stretches back tens of thousands of years into the midst of time and whenever we turn on our interior lights and settle down for an evening of relaxation and entertainment we always remember the determination and resourcefulness of our ancient forbears and pay respect to the fact that we are truly standing on the shoulders of giants!
